    POLITICAL ADVOCACY

When it comes to political advocacy and protecting the interests of its members, NAIFA is one of the best in the business. Our talented and experienced staff and volunteers engage decision makers at every level of the legislative and regulatory system. NAIFA's government affairs staff monitors federal legislation and mobilizes resources to achieve the most favorable outcome for members and their clients. The constituent and staff lobbying effort is strengthened by both our industry-leading political action committee, known as the Insurance and Financial Advisors Political Action Committee(IFAPAC), and the Advisors Political Involvement Committee (APIC), our grassroot network of members who have developed relationships with virtually every member of Congress.

At the state level, our state associations work hand in hand with NAIFA's national law department to positively impact state legislation and regulation. They develop lobbying strategies, comment on key issues, implement uniform policies and participate in litigation. Our many successes have hinged on NAIFA's favorable relationships with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), the National Conference of Insurance Legislators (NCOIL), the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), and the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws (NCCUSL).

NAIFA Day on the Hill 2010

As Your NAIFA Orange County President and past Government relations chair, I had the privilege to serve our local chapter by attending the Day on Hill in May in Sacramento.  The purpose of the Day on the Hill is to promote NAIFA and our  industry to our local Assembly members and State senators.  With me in attendance were,  Elizabeth Lee, immediate Past- President, and Larry Bassell, Government Relations Chair and longtime NAIFA-OC board member.

    Some of the highlights included:

    • Getting updated of key legislative bills and issues
    • Current election races,
    • Update on the Health Care Reform.
    •

Among the guest speakers were:  Shari McHugh, the NAIFA California lobbyist and advocate; and Assembly Member Hector De La Torre who is running for State Insurance Commissioner.

I have included a few of the topics that were discussed with our elected officials.  We were well received by our local legislators such as Diane Harkey, assemblywomen from Dana Point; the office of Mimi Walters, State Senate; and the office of Senator Tom Harmon of Newport Beach.

Thank you for allowing us to continue to serve and fight the continued threats on our industry and livelihood.

    Very Truly Yours,

    Jonathan P. Fagan

    NAIFA-OC President
